POSSE was originally designed to correct for monitoring problems that a performer can encounter on the stage and in the studio. By being able to independently set the level of your vocal mic, your instrument output, the ambiance of the room and any auxiliary input(s), you can customize your monitors to a comfortable and performance enhancing mix (you play better when you sound good to yourself). By carrying your mix with you from venue to venue, you’ll know and look forward to what you’re onstage monitor-mix is going to sound like at every show. The POSSE does not have a built in reverb but you can add some to your earphone mix by sending reverb ( triggered by your Vocal, Instrument or both) from the main mixing board to the AUX IN(s) on the POSSE Floor Box. Turning up the AUX knob on the Stand Box will add the effect to your earphones

If the blue TUNE light is illuminated on the Stand Box, then your guitar is in TUNE mode and is being muted to the House mixer. That’s usually it, but if it’s not, check for a bad cable, connection or dead pre-amp battery in your guitar. A weak battery in the POSSE Floor Box could also be causing the problem. Put in a fresh one or switch to the power supply (included).

Absolutely not. We included a set so that POSSE would be fully functional right out of the box. We expect that a lot of you will use your favorite earbuds and have designed POSSE to accommodate the diverse levels and impedances of the many earphones that we tested.

No. We purposefully chose to use a cable that was readily available at any electronic supply outlet (Radio Shack, Fry’s, Target, etc.). The cable that you’re asking about is an HDMI cable and any version of HDMI with the same plug design, will work. We made a similar decision choice regarding the cable that connects the Floor Box to the Belt Box. It is a standard 5-pin DIN cable also known as a MIDI cable. If you’re out there on the road and the one you have disappears or gets run over, you can find replacements at any music store. Just make sure that all five pins are wired. Some of the very old MIDI cables had only three pins working.

If your guitar pickup has a volume control you can easily mix the two. Turn down your guitar volume all the way; turn down the POSSE Master, all the way; plug the Acoustic Mic into the Stand Box; bring up the INST volume and the MASTER volume to a comfortable level; Mix your guitar in with the Acoustic Mic, using the guitar pickup volume control. You may want to reset the INST level in your earphones once you find the blend that you like. The House mixer will get the same blend from the POSSE’s INST OUT jack.

If your recorder has a choice of compressor settings ( usually referred to as “Conference” and “Voice”), choose “Voice”. It has the least amount of compression. We had great luck with the little Olympus series of hand held stereo recorders. If you have a recorder with input volume and other input controls, you might spend a little time with it at home to find the optimum setting for use with POSSE.

It won’t hurt anything. If you’re using the battery, POSSE’s internal phantom power will cause the battery to drain a little faster, that’s all. In that case, if you have a reliable phantom power source coming from the house mixing board, you should turn the POSSE phantom power off. If you’re not using a condenser mic that requires phantom power you should leave it off (default position). Some mics, especially ribbon types, can be harmed by the phantom power voltage. We added the phantom power option for those times that you get to a little club carrying your favorite condenser vocal mic to discover that the house mixing board doesn’t have phantom power or it’s not working….. and…. some small home studio’s may not have an easy to use phantom power option. POSSE provides one.

There’s a couple of things that will fix that. First try using a midi cable with a right angle plug at the belt box. Now when you step on it, the cable will be tugged from the side, instead of straight down. The second fix is cheaper (you don’t need to buy another MIDI cable). Wrap you guitar cord around the MIDI cable, use the velcro straps that are attached to the two cables to wrap around them – one just behind each end of the guitar cord. This will cause the MIDI cable to fall to the ground at the butt of the guitar (much like a regular guitar cord does). That method will eliminate the strain on the MIDI cable.

Yes.

We are talking about a wireless version of POSSE but that's not going to happen for a while.  POSSE works well with a wireless headphone rig. In that setup you would use the wireless headphone belt pack receiver and you would plug your instrument directly into the "INST IN"s on the POSSE Floor Box.  You could also use a wireless guitar system....that would mean having two devices on your belt; a wireless headphone receiver and a wireless guitar transmitter.

The advantage of using a wireless headphone (or guitar, or both) system with POSSE is that you don't need to enlist the sound man to integrate it into the house monitor bussing system. You can set the POSSE Floor Box right on top of your Wireless transmitter (or side-by-side in a single rack space), connect the POSSE 'headphone out' to the ' transmitter in' and you're all set. You Wireless receiver, that you clip to your belt, will receive the mix coming from POSSE, so all of your level changes, room mics, etc with be present in your headphone mix just like the wired version.

The POSSE Floor Box should have no ill effect on your Electric Guitar. The POSSE Belt Box has a circuit  (FET) that converts your electric guitar signal

from hi to low impedance, preventing any loss of tone...you may actually hear an improvement.

Your Recommended Setup:(see photo)

1. Plug your guitar into the Belt Box using the short guitar cord (included). Plug your earphones into the Belt Box.
2. Connect the Belt Box to the Floor Box using the MIDI cable (included).
3. With a short guitar cord (not included) connect "INST TO FX", on the Floor Box to Ethos IN.
4. With a short guitar cord (not included) connect Ethos out (Speaker Sim or Normal) to "INST IN L/MONO" on the Floor Box.
5. Connect "INST OUT" on the back of the Floor Box to the house PA.
6. If you're using a vocal mic, plug in the mic to the Stand Box (cable included), and connect the "MIC OUT" on the back of the Floor Box to the house PA.

This setup allows POSSE to be your direct box and it puts Ethos ahead of POSSE in the chain so that you can hear the effect of ETHOS in your earphone mix

Just purchased your unit and was so impressed I decided to become an affiliate. A simple question that I didn't see a particular application for but I tried it and worked with one observation. I am a bass player configuring the unit as follows. I need an amp on stage. I plug my bass into the belt box, take the instrument out from the floor box to the input of my amp, adjust my amps tone and take that direct output post eq to the FOH via the amps direct out. I can now also monitor my bass via the room mikes as well as my instrument volume. Here is the observation. Now I need an aux mix from the board with the rest of the band in it, including my bass so I can get the full frequency response of my effects and amp back in a monitor send. It works fine but when I try to adjust the instrument gain on the mixer it affects the aux volume through most of it's travel and when I adjust the aux volume it affects the instrument volume. The room mic volume is un affected. Ultimately they will both adjust but if I touch one, I have to re-adjust the other. The amount of adjustment on either knob requires about 50% of it's total travel to get a reasonable mix. So if my bass sounds good on the mixer at 12 o' clock and I need to adjust the aux monitor volume up, the instrument volume starts to drop considerably and I have to increase it almost 50% to match volumes in the buds. The converse is alsi true if I have an aux mix and I try to adjust the instrument. Again, it works...it's just a minor inconvenience, especially when you're charging quickly through a set list while live.

Hi Tom,

It's great that you're using POSSE. There are a couple of things that you can do to solve your issue. Either of these setups will allow you to hear your Bass post pre-amp before sending the signal to FOH.

1. Route you rig like this:

• Bass to Beltbox / Belt Box to Floor Box / "INST to FX"  out, to Bass Amp in /  Bass Amp Direct out (post EQ) to Floor Box "INST IN L/MONO" / Floor Box "INST OUT" to FOH

If you can adjust the output of your Amp's Pre-Amp out, you may have to bring the level down to the Mic level that the "INST IN" on the Floor Box, wants to see. Once you've done that, the signal at the " INST OUT" of the Floor Box (XLR or PHONE) will be just what the FOH wants to see. If you don't have a way to turn that down, you may need to pad that signal down somehow.

It sounds like your issue with the INST pot and the AUX pot effecting each other  is a Phase conflict between your bass signal coming into POSSE through the Belt box and the Bass returning from the house in the AUX inputs. Switching the INST PHASE switch on the side of the Floor Box should take care of that. Unless you don't have a choice, you should be able to remove your bass signal from the AUX mix, since you'll be hearing it post Pre-amp and through the Room mics.

2.  Setup with AMP mic:

• Bass to Beltbox / Belt Box to Floor Box / "INST to FX"  out, to Bass Amp in / Mic bass Amp with typical dynamic stage mic (ex. SM57) / plug a custom mic cable,(  XLR to unbalanced 1/4" TS Right angle plug)  to Stand Box 1/4" Mic Input (where the Gooseneck Mic goes).  {The custom Mic cable will be a regular mic cable with the male XLR plug replaced by a 1/4" mono phone plug. Pin 1 and 3 go to ground (sleeve). Pin 2 is hot (tip). insert a dummy plug into the "INST IN L/MONO"  on the Floor Box. This will put your miked bass signal into your earbuds and send it out to FOH via the "INST OUT" on the Floor Box.

Yes, you can include the rest of your band in the POSSE earphone mix. A line level mix of your whole band, that would normally go to your stage floor monitors, goes into the POSSE Floor Box in the AUX IN inputs. The signal can be mono or stereo. You can  then turn up that signal in your earphones with the AUX knob on the Stand Box.
There is also a Quick Start Guide in the front pocket of your POSSE bag (that a lot of people overlook) that gives you layout options. That might help, as well.

Yes, POSSE should work well for your application.

Setup:

1. A TRS 1/4 " or 1/8 " mini plug (stereo)  to a 1/4" TS Left (mono)  and 1/4"  TS right (mono) adapter cable (not included), connects the POSSE Floor Box 'PHONES'  OUTPUT, to Left and Right INPUTS  on the Shure Wireless PSM 600.

2. Connect the 1/4 " line out of your wireless (sax) mic receiver into POSSE Floor Box 'INST IN L/MONO'. Use your line out volume control on the Shure SXL  to adjust the level. The Sax will now go out the POSSE Floor Box 'INST OUT' to FOH. You can independently adjust the level of your Sax in your earphones with the Stand Box 'INST' knob.

If you're not using your Vocal mic for vocals, you can alternatively, connect the Shure SXL, XLR Mic output to the XLR mic cable attached to the POSSE Stand Box. Now your sax will go out the 'VOCAL OUT' of the Floor Box to FOH and  in your earphones, your sax will be controlled by the Stand Box 'VOC' knob.

The three units should stack easily on the stage, next to your mic stand or, if you're rack mounting them, you can use a longer HDMI cable to connect the POSSE Floor Box to the Stand Box. We've tested cables up to 30' with no problems.

(The following answer applies to your vocal, or your instrument, or both.) Though it's preferable to have your own voice removed from the PA monitor mix for complete control, it's not always possible if the entire band is sharing one mix. Luckily, it's not absolutely necessary. However, bear in mind that if your vocal is present in the PA monitor mix, when you turn your vocal level up on the POSSE, it will either add to ("in phase") or subtract from ("out of phase") the vocal coming from the PA monitor mix. Each PA is different, so the outcome is a 50/50 chance either way. For this reason, there are PHASE switches on the side of the POSSE Floor Box, one each for VOCAL and INSTRUMENT to compensate for this (the inset switches can be flipped using a pointed object, such as an earphone mini plug). If you find that your voice and/or instrument is cancelling out when you increase the VOC or INST  volumes on the POSSE, flipping the PHASE switches should correct the problem.

No. Though the POSSE itself is not wireless, it can be used seamlessly with wireless systems (mic, instrument, and/or earphones). If you have a wireless system, the advantage of using the POSSE of course is that you now have control of your own vocal and instrument. If you don't have a wireless system, our handy BELT BOX allows you to get an earphone feed from the POSSE while sending your instrument signal to the POSSE with a single cable. This would be the equivalent of two wireless systems, requiring two separate belt packs.

We also recommend using a right-angle MIDI plug at the belt box to prevent the cable from coming unplugged when accidentally stepping on the cable. If you're a guitar player, of course looping the cable around the guitar strap also provides adequate strain relief.

Great question, assuming I understand it correctly.

If you're wanting to hear exactly what the audience is hearing, along with the ambient stereo sound field, you'd simply feed the PA main mix output into the POSSE's AUX IN and control that signal via the AUX VOL control on the POSSE's stand box. You would then blend in the desired amount of stereo ambient sound with the ROOM VOL control. For this application, you would not use (turn down) the VOC VOL and/or INST VOL on the POSSE stand box, since your vocal and instrument would be included in the main audience mix via the POSSE AUX IN.

You could, but there are several disadvantages to this:

• If the open ear volume is too loud, then you have to turn up your earbud just as loud to make the volumes equal. The idea of in-ear monitors is to not only control the mix of what you hear, but to control (reduce) the overall volume. Loud volumes over sustained periods of time create ear fatigue, as well as causing you to "over-sing" and "over-play", thereby sacrificing all the nuances of your performance.

• The right and left ears, and the two corresponding hemispheres of the brain, process information differently. For example, pitch, timbre and loudness are discriminated better with left ear (right hemisphere), but duration & rhythm is better discriminated with the right ear (left hemisphere). Arbitrarily dedicating one ear for the band, and the other ear for you, could introduce unexpected results.

Yes. Many drummers place the POSSE stand box on a mic stand directly behind their head (and if they sing, a boom or gooseneck vocal mic over the top from behind). The POSSE's built-in stereo condensor ROOM mics act as overhead drum mics, allowing you to hear your kit as you normally would without in-ear monitors since the ROOM mics are located right near your ears. You can then use the VOC volume for your vocal mic, the INST volume for a click (or for kick, bass, etc), the ROOM volume for the kit, and the AUX volume for the rest of the band.

If you're a non-singing drummer, that would free up your vocal mic input to be used for another instrument (bass guitar, kick drum, etc.)

SECRET TIP: This may sound crazy, but if you need yet another input for hearing a click, you can actually feed a click (from your iPod, etc.) into the REC OUT jack on the floor box. (Since there's no volume control for this, the volume would need to be controlled at the source/iPod.) The REC OUT jack actually doubles as either a stereo mic level record output or a stereo line level input. (Only you would hear this.)

If you prefer not to use earbuds, the POSSE can act as your own personal mixer to feed a "powered" floor monitor (having a built-in amp). Since you would then hear your kit "naturally" (without the use of in-ear monitors), you would not use the stereo ambient ROOM mics to pick up the kit (which would likely cause feedback). With this arrangement, you could have control of your vocal volume and the stage mix volume in your floor monitor.

Wireless in-ear systems such as the Shure PSM200 cannot be compared to the POSSE because they're very different from one another in their respective functions. Like floor monitors, in-ear wireless systems can only deliver to your ears whatever mix the sound technician gives you. You have no control over this mix, other than verbally telling the sound tech what you want to hear during the sound check, or worse, using the all-too-familiar hand signals and dirty looks during the show.

Unlike wireless in-ear systems and floor monitors, the POSSE allows you to mix your own sound, rather than being stuck with what someone else gives you. If you want to change the level of your vocal, your instrument, the audience (stereo ambient sound field), or the rest of the band's instruments and vocals (fed to you by the sound technician), you just reach out and tweak a knob, even during a song - it's that simple!

The POSSE can be used on its own, or in conjunction with existing wireless in-ear monitor systems, or even with [powered] floor monitors. Our belt pack uses only one cable down to the floor box, but is the equivalent of two wireless belt packs - one for your earbuds, and one for your instrument.

We like to think that POSSE can benefit just about any performer on any stage.

A singer using POSSE will be able to control the level of their own voice, relative to a general monitor mix, just by  reaching over and turning the knobs on the Stand Box. No more flagging down the sound person and trying to get a reasonable  monitor mix by using hand gestures and scowls.

The ambient ROOM mics that are built into the POSSE Stand Box allow you to mix in some natural stereo room ambience.  A lot of people have trouble with earbuds because of the claustrophobic effect of having your ears completely plugged. By mixing in some stereo ROOM you can hear your band mates and the audience as you would without the earbuds.

There is no longer a need for floor monitors so  feedback is not an issue.

You hear yourself so much better that you don't have to overstress your voice, giving you much more control and preventing vocal fatigue and pitch issues.

POSSE has built-in phantom power for those singers that prefer to use condenser stage mics.  A lot of venues have phantom power but we wanted to be sure that you would always have a reliable source. We've found some out there that were not.

POSSE will work great with your rig.

A mic is placed in front of your amp as you would normally do/a female XLR to 1/4" phone (TS) cable ( not included) connects the mic to the instrument mic input on the side of the POSSE Stand Box. The mic signal is now in your earbuds, controlled by the INST knob on the POSSE Stand Box and it goes out to the PA through the INST OUT on the back of the POSSE Floor Box.  The PA' signal is unaffected by changing the settings on the Stand Box. If you are using the POSSE Belt Box, then a dummy 1/4" phone plug will need to be plugged into the INST IN L/MONO on the front of the Floor Box. That will prevent the dry guitar signal from mixing with the miked amp signal.

You can use the stereo room mics to hear the rest of the band or you can use the room mics to supplement a typical monitor mix that can be sent to the AUX IN(s) on the back of the POSSE Floor Box. The level of that signal to your earbuds is controlled by the AUX knob on the Stand Box.

Yes. There is a  limiter on the headphone amp to keep your ears safe. The VOC, INST, ROOM, AUX volume controls are combined to feed the [non-adjustable] peak limiter. The signal from the peak limiter is then sent to the MASTER VOL control and on to the headphone amp. Since the peak limiter's trigger threshold is fixed, adjusting the controls on "either side of the limiter would effectively make the limiter's trigger threshold "adjustable", all things being relative. (i.e., the mixer controls would be the equivalent of the limiter's input control, and the MASTER VOL would be the equivalent of the limiter's output control. It's a workaround, but bear in mind the limiter was designed to be invisible to most users, and only occasionally kicks in on very loud peaks when users have all their controls set to around 12:00.

In a typical POSSE setup, your vocal, your instrument, the stereo ambient sound field (ROOM MICS), and the "stage mix" (allowing you to hear the rest of the band) would all be available for you to control on the POSSE's stand box mixer. Regarding the stage mix, this would have to be provided from the PA or monitor mixer to the AUX INPUTS on the POSSE. This would be the equivalent of a mix normally sent to the floor speaker monitors or a wireless in-ear monitor system.

The only variable in your specific setup is your instrument signal and the need to switch between acoustic and electric guitars. Shown below is a visual suggestion. Using an A/B guitar routing switchbox, you to choose between the "direct" acoustic guitar or the "processed/amplified" electric guitar. You would hear these guitar signals in your earbuds via the INST VOL control on the stand box. The house PA system would get these same signals from the INST OUT XLR connector on the rear of the floor box.

Attached and below is a visual aid that hopefully will help. In this arrangement, you'd use a simple A/B switch box when switching between acoustic and electric guitars. Both your acoustic and electric guitars (the latter routed through effects and amp) would go out to the house via POSSE's INST OUT jack on the rear of the floor box.

Note: Be sure to switch on the POSSE's guitar tuner when switching instruments in order to mute any unpleasant clicks/pops to the audience. Additionally, you can use the A/B box to mute to your guitar amp when switching to avoid clicks/pops to the guitar amp.

Both. The POSSE will pass-through phantom power generated by the house system if available, but it will also generate it's own via a user switch if phantom power is not available from the house system.

A couple of things to try:

1. A single POSSE is meant for a single user but if you share the vocal mic and if neither, or only one of you, needs the instrument input, the other person can plug earphones into one of the PHONES outputs on the POSSE Floor Box (a second pair of earbuds and a headphone extension cable would do the trick). Those inputs produce the same signal as the PHONES output on the Belt Box. Your backing tracks would be plugged into the AUX IN (Stereo or mono) on the back of the POSSE Floor Box.

2. In a case like yours, where no one is using the INST IN, a second Mic can be plugged into the Gooseneck Mic in, that's located on the side of the POSSE Stand Box. This is a 1/4" jack instead of the typical XLR type that most mics use, so you would need to get an XLR female to 1/4" TS cable (Radio Shack has them). With this setup The second mic can be controlled in the earphones with the INST knob on the POSSE Stand Box and the house PA gets the second Mic signal from INST OUT on the POSSE Floor Box.

Hi Daniel,

Using both a Wireless Guitar and a Wireless Voc with POSSE works well. But I should point out- POSSE is a wired in-ear system. So, unless you also add a wireless in-ear transmitter and receiver (which also works very well), you will still be connected to the POSSE Floor Box by your headphone cable. That cable can be as long as you want, but it means you will not be completely wireless.

To set up POSSE with a wireless guitar system, using a Miked Amp:

• Setup your wireless guitar as you normally would. I'm assuming you have a belt pack transmitter and a receiver installed on, or near, your pedal board or stomp boxes.

• As you would normally do, go from your pedal board to your amp.

• Mic your amp just as you would for FOH.

• Now - instead of running a typical XLR mic cable from the amp mic to FOH, use an XLR female to 1/4" TS phone plug cable (Radio Shack has them) to go from the Amp mic to the side of the POSSE Stand Box. If you have a soldering iron, it's pretty easy to convert a regular Mic cable - Cut off the Male XLR connector and replace it with a 1/4" TS phone plug. Connect pin 1 to sleeve and pin 2 to tip. I recommend a right angle phone plug, just so it doesn't stick out on the side of the Stand Box.

The 1/4" phone jack on the Stand Box is where our Acoustic Gooseneck Mic normally plugs in. Plug into that input, and your Miked Amp signal will now go to the POSSE earphones, via the INST Volume control on the Stand Box and out the INST OUT on the back of the POSSE Floor Box to FOH.  (Adjustments that you make to your earphone levels will have no effect on the FOH signal).

Two ways to setup POSSE with a wireless mic:

1. Typically, the XLR cable that is hard-wired to the POSSE Stand Box, plugs directly into the Vocal Mic. In this application it will go to the Mic Out of the Wireless Receiver:

• The Wireless Mic receiver can be stacked onto the POSSE Floor Box.

•  The POSSE Mic cable coming from the POSSE Stand Box  (with a short extension), is  plugged into the MIC OUT of the Wireless Mic receiver.

• The signal from the Wireless Mic can now be routed to the POSSE earphones via the MIC volume control on the Stand Box and out the MIC OUT on the POSSE Floor Box to FOH.

2. This method allows you to rack mount the POSSE Floor Box:

• The XLR mic cable, that is attached to the POSSE Stand Box, is not used.

• One of the female plugs on a special XLR Y-cable (one male, two females)  is plugged into the MIC OUT of the POSSE Floor Box.

• The Mic Out of the Wireless Receiver is connected to the other female plug on the Y-adapter.

• The Male plug sends the signal to FOH.

• The earphone signal path is the same as above.

NOTE: If you do want to rack mount the POSSE Floor Box, it's a half rack size and will easily install alongside a Wireless Earphone Transmitter or a Wireless Mic Receiver. A longer HDMI cable will be required to connect the POSSE Floor Box to the POSSE Stand Box. We've successfully tested up to 40 ft.
